Some of you all asked me to describe the different foods and drinks we consume throughout this 11 month journey. Each month I’ll post a list of the different foods we eat which represents what a very limited food budget provides.
Month 1: Guatemala — living on $12 per day (food, utilities, lodging, transportation)
Typically, the Latin American food we have is some sort of combination of scrambled eggs, beans, white rice, and tortillas … and almost always saturated in sunflower oil and/or butter
1. pancakes + syrup
2. corn flakes and whole milk
3. rice milk with tons of sugar
4. coffee
5. scrambled eggs
6. refried beans (mixed in lard)
7. beans (sometimes with sliced hot dogs)
8. corn or flour tortillas (I have never had tortillas this dense before)
9. spaghetti with mixed vegetables (saturated in butter)
10. macaroni and cheese (concession stand cheese sauce)
11. white cheese
12. white rice (in butter)
13. chicken empanadas (fried)
14. nachos (concession stand cheese sauce and refried beans)
15. burritos (the way Guatemalans cut their beef means you need the teeth of John Wayne to chew it)
16. tostadas (bean, tomato sauce, or beef)
17. Prego pasta sauce
18. watermelon
19. sugar cookies are a common dessert

P.S. What happens when you cut out dessert and sugar in an American's diet? The girls CRAVE chocolate, cookies, and ice cream. Not good.
