I have 9 months until I leave for the Race. It’s gonna be a while – you could literally grow an entire human being in that amount of time. I have to admit, I’m getting a bit restless.
If you’re signed up to leave on the Race in January or July or September you know what I mean. I’m excited. I can’t wait to meet my squad-mates and visit new countries and see all of the amazing ways that God is working throughout the world. I spend all of my free time thinking about the Race, reading blogs about the Race, Facebook stalking my squad-mates, and fundraising for the race.
I’m still living in China teaching English and it’s still just as awesome as it was the day I got here. If I focus all of my energy on tomorrow I’ll miss out on the crazy things that are happening all around me. The children giggling when I say hello to them. A class wide dance off to Gangnam Style. The look of awe when a local realizes I know the lyrics to a song in Chinese. Trying to decide between “Chicken” flavored or “Beef and Tomato” flavored Cheetos because the regular cheese kind don’t exist here. The little everyday things that make life so incredible.
wherever you are, be all there.
Maybe you’re like me and you’re anticipating launch. Don’t neglect today because you’re so excited about the future.
Maybe you’re on the Race and you can’t wait to leave Honduras to go to India. Remember that there are people where you are RIGHT NOW that are waiting for you to show them God’s love.
Maybe you are waiting to lose 10 pounds before you ask that guy out. Maybe you are waiting to apply to the Race until you are a “better Christian”. Maybe you are waiting to reconcile that friendship. Maybe you are waiting on applying for that job. Maybe you’re waiting on writing that book. Maybe you’re waiting on going back to school.
Whatever it is that you are waiting for, don’t be so focused on the future that you forget about what is happening today.
Wherever you are in life, be all there. There are no guarantees about tomorrow. Make the most of today. It’s good to be excited about the future, but take some time to appreciate today.
