The World Race. That sounds suspiciously athletic. It’s not. I exercised once, but I found I was allergic to it. My skin flushed and my heart raced. I got sweaty and short of breath. Very dangerous. I won’t make that mistake again.
The World Race isn’t an actual race (although it will likely involve some degree of exercise, but that’s a topic for another day).
The World Race is a Christian missions trip through an organization called Adventures in Missions. It’s an 11-month journey through 11 different countries. Through adventure, ministry, community, and self-discovery, World Racers work to advance God’s kingdom around the globe. This unique mission trip is a challenging adventure for young adults to abandon worldly possessions and a traditional lifestyle in exchange for an understanding that it's not about you; it's about the Kingdom.
Racers get to teach English, befriend women who are trapped in prostitution, work with orphans and children with disabilities, minister in prisons, pray for the sick, plant churches, do some manual labor and lots of other really neat stuff that will meet the specific needs of each country and will show God’s love. Pretty awesome.
Oh yeah. Racers do this all while living out of a backpack, sleeping in a tent, and observing questionable hygiene practices.
So it may sound a bit crazy, but this is what I’m going to be doing with my life starting in July of 2013. So follow my blog – it will follow me through this journey. It’s going to be an interesting experience… And knowing me, also highly entertaining…
So on that note, I’ll leave you with one of the bible verses that has inspired me to race:
However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me – the task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace. Acts 20:24
