Here are a list of 10 things I recommend knowing before you book your next trip outside the country.
- You are an outsider visiting a foreign country— do no expect other cultures to be like yours. Embrace the differences!
- Do not take photos of people without asking for their permission. People are not like zoo animals— they are people, like you and I.
- Take time to think about this: if you were to visit this country without bringing your camera, would you still go?
- Get to know people, even if they are just a waiter or a person selling souvenirs. Those people are doing their jobs and sometimes have cool stories to share.
- Learn some new words or phrases in the language spoken. It shows you respect getting to know the life and culture of the country you are in.
- Remember: people in other countries are not charity work to make you look better or like a hero. Find humility and let go of pride.
- Let go of generalizations or assumptions you have about certain people groups or cultures; they can be dangerous.
- Do not spend your entire time living in fear when you’re in other countries. Enjoy the life you’re living and be cautious!
- Screen time should be limited— don’t instagram a play by play of your trip.
- Enjoy other cultures and embrace them, but be open and respectful to those you meet. The world is a big place, and it’s fun when you realize it’s bigger than just you.
