In our last week of ministry we were working at a school in Santa Cruz. We got the chance to teach a morals class to a few different classes throughout the day and it was so much fun! The students ranged from 2nd graders all the way to 16 year olds in their last year of high school. This particular lesson was adapted from a Beauty for Ashes (previous blog) activity that we’ve done in the past.

We asked the students to think about how they picture God and then to draw a picture of what they see. We told them there was no wrong answer and it didn’t matter if they were a good artist, that everyone see’s God differently.

These are a few of the students with their drawings. (And yes, I got their permission to take these photos).

“I see God as a Father that leads me. This is me on a very big road. Showing that the world is very big and that there are a lot of paths to take. I’m on the path in the middle- the right path.”

(Left) “I drew a picture of God but you can’t see his face, because nobody has ever seen God’s face. I think He’s almighty and powerful and bright.”

“I drew a picture of the cross because that represents God and Jesus dying for our sins. But I also drew the world because God reigns King over our world.”

“My picture is of God’s eye. I drew it really big because I think God is literally BIG. Bigger than us and our world. See, there’s Earth down at the bottom. I wrote ‘Earth’ in English, too.”

“This is a picture of God holding the Earth in His hands. I think of God as a protector over my life and He cares for me.”

“This is a picture of God in heaven. I think heaven will be peaceful and we can walk with God every day. He is also walking on roads made of golden coins.”

This was one of our three classes that day! They were such an amazing group of students. What I love about getting to do lessons like this is I end up learning way more about myself and my realtionship with God than I feel like I taught! These kids really opened up my eyes to what ‘childlike faith’ means!
