each tuesday we have sabbath, and i thought it would be kinda cool to share what my sabbath looks like with you. 🙂 sometimes I call my family or friends, sometimes I read my book for a few hours or sometimes i go for a run. to be completely honest, im still learning what types of things I want to incorporate in my sabbath each week-but I also like switching it up. the one consistent thing I have noticed is that my sabbath normally comes with having at least 3 cups of coffee lol
we listened to a podcast from BEMA about sabbath the other day during team time, and one thing that really stuck with me was when they shared how sabbath is meant for rest, but also to do things that we wouldn’t normally do on a regular day. originally, I was a little stressed about going to the ATM this morning because it meant less rest time. I realized though, that it was still rest. rest could be working out, sleeping, running errands, baking-however you find rest can look like sabbath. oftentimes its something that you don’t usually do.
this is what my sabbath today has looked like:
6:15am: woke up to the sunrise but remembered its sabbath so back to bed I went
9:30am: got out of bed, got dressed and ready for the day (fun fact: this is the latest I’ve slept in since being here)
10:30am: Fabi made us breakfast (coffee, plantains, and watermelon)
11:00am: haley, becca, alegria, fabi and I made a spur of the moment trip to the ATM. (we also stopped at the lab to drop off a test for one of our teammates. prayers for no parasite!!) alegria started to fall asleep in my arms on the way home, so fabi showed us a expensive house on our detour in hopes that alegria would fall asleep. (she didn’t)
12:00pm: haley, becca and I sat and talked with fabi about the most random things you could ever imagine. we also worked on practicing our spanish with him. martina (also lives on the property) came and hangout for a bit and we invited her to a fiesta de helado a las 7:30pm.
1:00pm: lunch time!! we just had leftover pizza from last night (I had more coffee), but tonight for dinner is mote sucio. It kinda translates to “dirty corn” but basically, its a type of corn with hamburger and a few other things. I compared it to a hot dish and then realized I’m the only one on my squad that knows what hot dish is… #midwestthings
1:30pm: decided it was a good time to have my quiet time today since I slept in and didn’t do it earlier. journaled a little, read my bible, started my blog and drank some more coffee. I also reorganized my spotify playlists a little bit (again)- it’s a legit hobby you guys
3:00pm: abby came outside and we talked a little about her song that she wrote & then I called my mom quick to check ask a couple questions about seeing the doctor
3:30pm: andrea (the doctor) comes to look at my wrist. I’m not exactly sure what I did to it, but the last couple weeks its been hurting a lot. one blessing in disguise is that I’ve been able to slowly become ambidextrous since it’s my right wrist that is out of commission.
4:30pm: after seeing andrea my plan was either to workout or work on my song that I’ve been writing. neither of those happened, but I really don’t remember what I did instead.
5:30pm: another trip to run errands with fabi! we went to drop off a few more tests for some other teammates, as well as go to the pharmacy to get some stuff for my wrist. driving with fabi is one of the most exciting, terrifying and exhilarating things I’ve ever experienced. highly highly recommend if you’re ever in quito.
6:45pm: dinner!! we had our “dirty corn” with cabbage and carrots and a couples candies for dessert. we are no just hanging out waiting for martina to come for our fiesta de helado. some people are doing dishes, some reading, a couple are working out and the rest of us are just talking together.
8:00pm: fiesta de helado!! in classic ecuadorian time (we are starting to conform to this), we didn’t start our fiesta until about a half hour after we planned it. this was oh so special to my heart, to eat ice cream, dance, and laugh with my friends forgetting all the worries of the world.
9:00pm: we all said chow to martina and ended our sabbath sitting in the living room talking, laughing and singing random disney songs. (disney songs seem to be a theme lately)
to be completely honest- this sabbath has been so different than how I would “normally” choose to spend my sabbath. but it has been just as restful if not more. My challenge to you is to think about what sabbath looks like to you? would you curl up and read a book or watch a movie? would you go run errands? what do you think rest looks like to you? or what are some surprising ways that you have found yourself finding rest that you wouldn’t have thought of?
much love,
julia
(ps. we are praising the lord so much tonight because half of my pictures from my phone are on my computer!! i’ve checked for them numerous times and found nothing-but tonight they were there! I still don’t have all of them, but im so happy for the ones I do have.)
