I have missed fall in America more than I thought that I would. I miss carving pumpkins, bonfires, pumpkin flavored everything, cold days, my moms white chili, fall smells, candy corn, Tate Farms, just everything fall. I am part of the P.P.C. (party planning committee) on my squad, and me and two other people took on the task of planning halloween. It was the first holiday on the race, and we knew that we needed to make it feel like fall some how.
The day of Halloween is on a Thursday, which is a ministry day, so we did not do any thing big that day. We had people paint/draw pumpkins to put on the wall in the commons room, and we made this big sign that said “HAPPY HALLOWEEN.” People came up with some clever pumpkins. There were pumpkins on a stage singing and dancing, pumpkins surfing, pineapple pumpkin, an alien pumpkin, a disco ball pumpkin, a butterfly pumpkin, two pumpkins dressed like our squad leaders Jill and Samuel. So many pumpkins!! I went a little bit overboard making pumpkins with my teammate Brooke. I did a “pump it up pumpkin” and it was a pumpkin that was working out. I did a pumpkin skiing, a pumpkin carriage and cinderella, and a snowman pumpkin. I also did a Chick-fil-a pumpkin that was spotted like a cow, and was holding up a sign that said “eat more butternut squash” Me and my friend, Sam, dressed up that night for dinner as Mustard and Ketchup. She had a red crewneck and red pants, and I had a yellow crewneck and yellow pants. Then we taped signs to us that sign ketchup and mustard. This day was fall-off listening to Monster Mash and Thriller. Me and Brooke also wrote a Christian Halloween song that goes like this….
“Don’t be mean on halloween
Hold no ammoninisty
Galatians 5:18 fruit of the spirit generosity
Don’t be stingy, share your candy
Your spider webs don’t scare me
We say Jesus name, demons flee
Cause we got full authority
If you are looking for a costume don’t fear
Just ask us well make it clear
Halloweens the perfect night to let your inner self shine
Dress up like Jesus he’s divine
Share candy like Jesus
Pump it up like Jesus
Dress up like Jesus
Joyful joyful joyful halloween
Spread that joy on halloween
Happy happy halloween”
Yes I realize this is a very weird song. It was just so fun to make and produced a lot of laughter between me and Brooke while we were making it. The night after halloween is when we really celebrated!!!! The guys were away on their man time in Manzini, and the girls got the night to themselves!!! All of the teams did a team costume. One team did the nativity scene, one dressed up exactly like the boys on our squad, one dressed up like Snow White and the seven dwarfs, one dressed up like rappers, and my team dressed up like fighters. We had a trick-or-treat scavenger hunt where the team leaders and me and Syd were at doors with candy. There were clues that went to certain places all over the base like “drip drip”” was that water tower, and “scrub dub dub” went to the Laundry station. At these places were fan facts about the people behind doors, and a password. We gave them a list of who was at what door, and then they would have to go to who they thought it was and say the right password to get candy. We then would give them another clue to another place. This was so so fun to be apart of and plan. After this we had a spontaneous fight night. Haha Then we had a halloween themed riff off around a bonfire. To close up the festivities we worshiped around the bonfire!!!!! This was just such a beautiful way to wrap up our first holiday on the race. I am so thankful for my squad and they way they made the base feel like a home away from home. I can’t wait for the many more holidays to come!!
Happy fall y’all 🙂
