This month I’m in South Africa working with a women’s empowerment organization called Zimele. Zimele works with women in rural areas to help them save money, start businesses and give back to their communities.
My team is staying at a guest house run by one of Zimele’s Self Help Groups (SHG). This group is made up of 10 women who do all the cooking and upkeep for the guest house. These women are also master crafters having their crafts displayed at a show in New York.
With the profits from their businesses these women are: running a pre-school, building a house for an orphan boy and his siblings, providing food for 5 needy families in their community while getting each family on track towards self sufficiency, running an exercise class and helping to combat infant malnutrition.
In short these women are amazing and it has been so much fun to spend this last week with them. Some of our adventures have been: collecting fire wood and carrying it back on our heads, making mud bricks for the orphan home and racing the neighborhood grandma’s at the fitness class.
This is shaping up to be a really fun month.
