I just watched Good Morning Vietnam with Robin Williams for the first time. The film carried a bit more emotional weight be default due to Mr. Williams recent passing. But the film also stirred in me such excitement to go and love on the Vietnamese. Robin was well known to be able to light up a room, break down barriers, and of course – make people laugh.
If you haven’t seen the film, Robin fancies a Vietnamese woman walking down the road; in order to pursue her, he ends up building real relationships with the locals. What started out as simply a man chasing beauty turned into a rare glimpse (at the time) of true companionship between two very different cultures.
Even though this is a movie and it is scripted, a genuine sense of delight is conveyed between Robin and the Vietnamese friends he makes that can barely speak English.
I get to go to Vietnam in April. I cannot wait to love on these people in the name of Jesus. It’s neat that something as silly as an old comedy from the 80s could stir up passion for a people group.
Basically, Robin Williams would have been a good missionary.
