“Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.” For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.” When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.” ??John? ?13:3-17? ?
Today one of the girls on our team felt led by the Lord to have our team wash each other’s feet as Jesus washed His disciples feet. This afternoon we drew names out of a bowl to see whose feet we were washing. I was the last one to draw a name but before anybody drew a name I already knew whose feet I was going to wash. The Lord was already teaching me something about humility and compassion.
Alex washed my feet and that was a very sweet moment with Abba Father. Alex has already served me so much during this trip that it was super great to see her humble herself again and wash my feet. Alex is and will continue to be a person of Peace. She’s so calm and tender but has a fierce love for God and people. As Alex washed my feet her hands were full of the love of the Father. For a brief moment I was reminded on a deeper level and in awe of the love of a Jesus. Moments before His arrest He was loving those closest to Him till the end. He became such a humble servant and knelt under these men to wash their feet. I was reminded how that is exactly what Jesus did for me.
“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.” 1 John? ?3:16? ?
??After my feet were washed it was my turn to wash. I had the high honor and privilege to wash Akelea’s feet. As soon as I began to wash her feet for a brief moment I began to weep. I felt Abba whisper, “This is what I have done and continue to do for you.” I was filled with much compassion and just humility before Akelea. It was a special moment to be able and look and act like Jesus in that moment. As the Scripture says, “blessed are you if you do them,” I surely was blessed on a deeper level.
Moving forward, I’m pushed and challenged to humble myself and ask the Lord, “Who’s on your heart? How can I humble myself more to show Your great love?” It doesn’t matter where I am or what’s going on, there’s always an opportunity for me to become the least and become Kingdom minded.
“We love because he first loved us.” 1 John? ?4:19? ???
(Thank you Alex and Akelea for teaching me more about Christ’s love. It’s an honor to be on Team Zeal with you both.)
