This has been a long time coming. I’ve been waiting two years for this day to come, with a lot of ups and downs. Wanting to give up the world race and my dreams to preach the gospel to the nations, but God was faithful getting me here to Cambodia. The feeling of going to Cambodia was very surreal to me. It didn’t really hit me during training camp, it didn’t hit me when I made my second deadline, or when I went on a 15 hour trip to South Korea.
It suddenly hit me when I got out of the airport. The feeling, the smells, the sounds. It hit me like a ton of bricks that I was in Cambodia and this dream of mine wasn’t a dream anymore but a reality! The first day we met our ministry host Boeurn(bon) a very humble and kind man with a desire and passion to see slum kids have an education and a relationship with Jesus. We all got into a tuk-tuk from the airport, a first for me. We took a 15 minute ride from the city of Phnom Penh to what they call the city peace 2 aka the slums. Some of the people that make up this community were in the process of being relocated from the city of Phnom Penh to a new location in 2005 so that the city could be a tourist friendly city. There was a lot of resistance toward the move because of the promises of the government of free housing and a school system, but they never followed up with their promises. They demanded $2,000 dollars which is a lot here. So they resisted, there was fighting and the outcome of it resulting in pain. The hope for this community was for it to be a peaceful area where the people from the slums could reside. This is where the name Peace 2 comes from. Till this day they haven’t kept their promises they have a government school, but they have to pay for it. Most can’t afford it so you will see most kids walking around the slums, smoking and drinking at an early age. With all that being said God has his cover here he has people like Boeurn who work relentlessly to help out the community and the children here. It’s humbling to see the living conditions here, but exciting to see God do his work and what He has plan for us!
