The picture above is definitely one of my favorite pictures. Taken 19 years ago today, this photo captures the moment I shed the role of single child and took on the even better role of big brother! This is something many boys get to experience, and I’m grateful that others get to experience being a big brother, too. But my family’s story has a unique, incredible twist.
On the evening of March 15th,1996, aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents joined my parents and I at the Des Moines International Airport to celebrate the arrival of my little brother. We had been anticipating the arrival of my brother, Matthew, for months. Born in Korea, we were ready to finally welcome him home!
I’m grateful for this night 19 years ago because of everything that has happened between then and now. From citizenship ceremonies to football games, graduation day to late night fried chicken, and choir concerts to me beating him in FIFA, I’m honored to have experienced so much of my life with him.
Two and a half months from now we’ll celebrate once again. In the meantime, I’ll celebrate Brothers Day as an international holiday, taking the memories and lessons learned from the last 19 years everywhere I go!
Happy Brothers Day, Matthew!
