On Friday some of us went to a ministry
called Helping hands with Hearts for Christ. It is a school for the Deaf. One of
the founders, Mike, had originally been a part of Cicrin orphanage(where we are
located for the month), but then God had other plans for him.
It was a
challenge not being able to communicate with most of them, and then I realized
that this is how most people have felt since month one, and that this is going
to be how I feel a lot through out this race! Oh boy… It will be growing=D
The kids were so
precious,
and it was fun
learning some sign language. Mike told us how it used to be against the law to
speak with your hands in Nicaragua. (Strange, I know..) So families that had
deaf children would have to keep them locked up in their homes for their
protection. Several years ago the
law change, and God put the need for these kids to be schooled on Mike’s
heart.
The school teaches
the kids sign language, and how to read English and Spanish, so they are
learning three languages at once! They also teach them right out of God’s word.
For every child
that comes they require a parent or a sibling to come as well, so that they can
communicate with their families. Most parents are also unschooled so it works
out well for them, and they learn right alongside the kids. It’s a beautiful thing they have going
on here! They also provide a nutritious meal for each person, (sometimes it’s
the only meal these people get for the entire day.) and they provide bus
transportation to get them to and from school. It is an amazing ministry and
they are seeing a lot of fruit!
This ministry is
supported entirely by donations. If anyone would like to support them donations
