Bonswa! We have spent the past month in the city of Grand Goave, Haiti. We are working in construction at Mission of Hope of school http://www.mohhaiti.org/ and have been pulling nails out of boards, moving large pieces of plywood, and sweating buckets…. They have school each weekday while we are working and there are several hundred kids present. As soon as we walked through the gate at the school on our first day numerous children immediately walked up to us. The kids desire for love and affection was apparent, as they wanted to hold our hands and also asked to be picked up and held.
Bekah has had the opportunity to bring her talent of dance to the “Hands and Feet” orphanage, just down the street from the school where we do construction. She has taught the 7 girls from the orphanage and also has had the opportunity to speak with them about personal struggles and daily life. Bekah choreographed a dance for the girls, which they performed at the church on one Sunday morning and evening. There are also 24 boys at the orphanage, which Josh has gotten to play soccer and basketball with.
On several days this past month we completed a half-day at the construction site and spent the afternoon at a nearby village, a short walk from where we live. We have done several bible skits for the kids, played duck, duck, goose (known as “chicken, chicken, pig” in Haiti) and prayed over the village and people in it.
These three ministry opportunities have been amazing and we are so thankful to be able to love on the Haitian people.
Things we have noticed about the Haitian people is their strong work ethic and also the popularity and widespread amount of voodoo. The locals here are a stark contrast from the Dominican Republic as we always received a smile and waive in the DR, but here we commonly get a cold blank stare from the adults in Haiti. The Kids however always smile and waive.
