I am taking a year off from school to be on the Race. When I go back in the Fall I will finish my studies in business. That is as far forward as I could see my future until yesterday. We were working our restaurant shift for the day, busing and resetting tables, running food, etc. and I was loving every minute of it. Our hosts run a small restaurant out of which they run their ministry. After the lunch hour I talked to Peter for a good while, discussing the business side of restaurants and how it opens the door for ministry. That’s when it clicked!
For the last several years I have wanted to open my own restaurant. And for years I have listened to numerous people with a past in the business, talk me out of it. It’s a crappy lifestyle, there are long hours, you don’t make much money, the success rate is slim, the atmosphere is detrimental to your spiritual life, etc. etc. I had given up the dream and mentally filed it under “retirement plans.” Then God opened the door once again, and also knocked out the walls around it, and standing before me was not just an open door, but a gaping opening to my future. God was telling me clear as day, “Do this!”
**This is not their restaurant, just a cool picture**
I realized that I had never talked to someone who opened a restaurant with purely spiritual motives. When you open a business with the sole purpose to minister and share the gospel, and you put your trust in Him rather than economic principles, financial planning, and your own knowledge, I truly believe you end up with a business model that looks like Peter’s: a thriving restaurant, a spiritually-feeding environment, and an opportunity to minister like never before.
Peter even invited me to come back and work under him and learn all the ins and outs of the business for a few months when the Race is over. What an opportunity. I will surely hope to take him up on this offer when I finish school.
I don’t know details, but I know 3 things: I want to minister in America, I want to open a restaurant, and I want to start a church in my restaurant. God will work out the rest.
