We went to KISM (Korean International School of Malaysia) and had the best time! It was more than just a tour, we were able to participate in their classes, worship, dance and hear the message for the day. That’s right- this school is Christian based.
As I followed my teammate to go practice a song before performing it for worship, I stopped to pray for a woman in the break room. She was a beautiful African woman and her name was Chamelee, (or something close to that).
At first we just shared small talk. It was really nice, sometimes I notice I like to do my own ministry with people like Chamelee. I think I find it heart warming to bless people who aren’t “on the list” so to speak. People who don’t expect anything from you.
Chamelee is a 30 some year old woman who works at the KISM. She looked very tired that day, which is why I wanted to sit and just be with her. If she’s an extrovert then I hope I gave her some energy. If she’s an introvert than I hope I didn’t make her too uncomfortable.. Ha
I was supposed to be upstairs practicing, so after a little chatting I simply offered that I could pray for her. She said yes and laughed in a way that made us both happy.
We held hands across the table and gave thanks to the Lord.
You know what I remember most about that moment? How vibrant my skin color stuck out when we held hands. I really haven’t held hands with many Africans, nor have I been able to spend a lot of time with them. ..and boy am I white! Hah
On a deeper note, it was striking to me because I realized how beautiful all types of nationalities are. Our God is such an artist, isn’t he? I mean, our hands just looked so striking together.
One extreme color compared with another.
Small moments like that are the ways I’ve experienced culture shock.
Another time was in India I experienced culture shock because we were suddenly surrounded by about 40 Indian boys and men praising Jesus and singing in Telugu! I couldn’t understand a word but I knew Jesus was there. -That was probably the first time I really had to grasp the concept that God speaks all languages. He fully understands all cultures, all social norms, all socially acceptable “rights” and “wrongs”.
Crazy! Hahah
Traveling is so fruitful to the soul. I’m so happy to be experiencing a taste of Gods world.
Again I uploaded more photos! you can get there by clicking “view photos” on the left. Some photos I’m requested not to post on facebook which is why I’ve decided to not link my blog with FB anymore. Thanks for keeping up!
