My team spent the month of June staying in a church and working with a Pastor David and his family in Calera, Nicaragua.  Calera is a small community where most people live in poverty.  Most homes have dirt floors, a tin shack outhouse as their bathroom and another tin shack built to be used for cold bucket showers.  We were fully immersed in this culture throughout the month and it was often challenging for many of the people on my team.  Overall though it was an amazing month of ministry and we all survived and learned a lot through it all.

Our ministry this month mainly involved assisting local church´s with different projects in the local community. Some of the projects we were involved in were picking up garbage in the streets, digging in a water line for a school that previously had no water, planting a garden at a school, building a school for another local community, preaching on Sundays in our church, and going with pastor to visit and pray for people in the community.

Working with Pastor David and other local pastors was incredibly encouraging.  Watching the way they care for the people of the community and work together on projects served as a great example of what it means to be a servant and put Christ and others ahead of yourself.

The family also took great care of us during our entire stay with them.  They made us feel like part of their family by inviting us into their home, cooking our food, and washing our dishes and always making sure we had everything we needed to be as comfortable as possible.  All of this made it one of my favorite months of the race.  Now we’re onto our final month in Costa Rica.  I’m looking forward to all that God has for us there as well as finishing the race and coming home at the end of the month.
