As I sat there
with a group of children from Malaysia, trying to teach them the English
language, I began to wonder if this is how God feels at times. Learning a
language is no easy task, so I definitely respect the children who desire to
learn and am amazed at their ability to learn. However, I found myself
repeating seemingly simple words over and over again. I would say the word
“tired” and they would try repeating the word back but had a tough time. So, in
order for them to better understand how to say the word, I had them try to
spell it in attempt to have them pronounce it phonetically. Still, the students
had a difficult time with the word “tired”. Now, don’t get me wrong, I
understand that if I were to try to learn a seemingly simple word in a foreign
language I may have trouble. It may be the easiest word in the world to that
native speaker but to me it is the most difficult thing in the world to
perfect. However, even though we had trouble understanding each other, we had a
great time enjoying each other’s company.
I then think
about the Lord as he tries to teach us about Himself. It may appear to be the
simplest idea to the Lord but for us it is the most difficult idea to grasp.
However, when we are unable to say the word “tired” in our spiritual journeys,
He remains patient and tries another way to help us understand. It may be
frustrating not being able to understand our Lord at times, but it is
comforting to know that we can still have a great time enjoying each other’s
company.
