The Setting:
My entire squad (41 people) has been staying just outsite of Tegucigalpa, Honduras for the past two weeks now. We are staying with a North American missionary named Tony. He has taken in about 10 local kids and cares for them as if he is their father. One of these kids is a 14 year old named Carlos. His favorite thing to do is give me wet willies (lick is finger just before shoving it into my ear). He also calles me "Lady Gaga" for some unknown reason, so needless to say, we share a very special bond.
Week One:
Last week, my team (7 people) traveled into the mountains to a place called the Vally of Angels where we worked on building a fish pond. This consisted of collecting, smashing, and rolling/carrying huge rocks through the mud. It was extrememly exhausting but very satisfying since we knew this fish pond would feed thousands of orphans in the years to come. It makes me angry to think that there are people in this world without food, when it has always been so readily available to me my entire life.
Week Two:
After an exhausting first week, my team was excited to hear that we would be going to a school for week two. (No more manual labor/sunburn!) When we got to the school on Monday, the principal informed us that it was exam week, sooo… instead of working in the classroom, we dug a soccer field into the side of the mountain so the students would have an adequate location for recess. Thankfully, exam week means half days for the students and for the soccer field diggers. 🙂
