This blog title, “the calling doesn’t create the monk,” is apparently a common spanish saying. Basically, it means what you wear doesn’t change who you are and what you are called to do.

Our host in Panama had a conversation with me at the end of the month. We were reflecting back on what he thought of us when we first got there.

He told me that he knew I was a businessman from the moment he met me. I thought that was hilarious because I wore basketball shorts, a soccer jersey, and a camouflage baseball cap. But apparently that didn’t make a difference.

That is when he told me about this saying. I’ve felt called for a while to be in full time ministry, particularly as an executive pastor so I can put all of my business training to good use. This was an awesome confirmation to me as it was simply a natural outpouring of who I am. God is so good and constantly reminds us of our calling if we are just willing to listen. But he also wants is to be ourselves. He has given us gifts and passions for a reason…and he simply wants is to get up everyday and go to work.
