Thanksgiving this year was unlike any other we’ve experienced. We spent Thanksgiving morning on the beach and the evening volunteering at our preschool’s graduation. We didn’t get to spend it with our parents or any of our siblings- even though Skype helps; it’s just not the same. There were no colorful leaves or bonfires where we are. It’s hot and windy here on the Cape. There was no football on TV to fall asleep to. None of us went shopping or put up Christmas trees the next day. Even though we were lacking so many things that make Thanksgiving what it is, we still had an amazing holiday. Our team celebrated Thanksgiving on Friday along with six of our South African friends who’d never been a part of our American holiday. Ashley and the other girls made a delicious meal with all the fixin’s. We had turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, stuffing, green beans, corn, cranberry sauce, and rolls. To top it off, we had berry cobbler, pumpkin pie and chocolate pie with homemade whipped cream. Though we may not have spent our day with family, we were with some amazing friends for whom we are so thankful.

Over the past three months, I’ve recognized so many things in my life I’m thankful for that I took for granted at home. In the Philippines, I was thankful for privacy, air conditioning, my water bottle and American cuisine. In China, I was less superficial. I realized how thankful I was to have five siblings whom I love and that I wasn’t raised alone. I’m grateful for a government that protects and provides for me. I’m thankful to have the freedom to think for myself and practice what I believe and am passionate about. These realizations have continued into South Africa. I’m thankful for my education and opportunities I’ve been provided. I’m thankful for food, clothing, health, and a roof over my head at night. I see these children and realize I’m thankful for two parents who love me unconditionally and never ignored or abused me. I’m thankful for a wife who loves and supports me through fun times and tough times. Lastly, I’m most grateful for Jesus Christ and the ultimate sacrifice He made two thousand of years ago. He died so that I might truly live. Everything that I am and every gift I have is a blessing from God. For that, I’m eternally thankful.
Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things.
In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all.
Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name.
“But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.
– 1 Chronicles 29:12-14
