Over the last week I have been working in a red-light district in India. I have seen a lot of heart breaking things, but I have also seen a lot of beauty in those heart breaking things. One such instance is this little girl that I get to see each day. She wears the same dress and the same smile every time I see her. Despite living in a spiritually dark place she operates in what appears to be pure joy. I wrote this poem about her while sitting in the back of a children’s service put on for the kids in the area. As sad as her story may seem, I am encouraged by her. The way she walks around the streets with such joy and child-like faith makes the demons tremble. Jesus will continue to walk with her as she brings light and love to a spiritually hardened people. I believe she will be used to awaken this place, to soften hearts, and to bring restorative hope. The girl in the flower dress is fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of a God that loves her immensely more than she could ever imagine, and when she understands this its game over Satan.
Girl in the Flower Dress
Same dress everyday
Same smile anyway
Living in darkness
Filled with laughter
Surrounded by brokenness
Carries light everywhere
Demons hold homes
Jesus covers her
Raised in slums
Discipled by King
Expected to fall
Destined for victory
Same dress everyday
Same smile anyway
