Oh man what a month it has been! From graduating Fort Lewis to serving at North West Haiti Christian mission for 8 days to going back too Sonlight Camp I have been exhausted but having a wonderful time! I’ll start by recapping a bit of how I saw the Lord work in Haiti. As part of the mission work we did there we went to a village called “caranage” where the religion of Voodoo is very present. They did not have a church and many voodoo services such as animal sacrifices and rituals were held. As we walked in I could feel just a deep sad emptiness, one I feel often back here in the United States, as we walked further I could tell that the people were just tired and needed something more than they had. We walked around praying for various people and I quickly noticed a theme in what they asked for, provision. I think often when we don’t have the Lord we feel dry, empty, alone so we try to fill this void with physical needs in our lives. in Psalm 23:5 it says “You prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.” I realized while my physical needs were drastically different than the Haitians I do the EXACT same in my life when I have drawn away from the Lord, so often I long to be at his table, to have him prepare a place for me and to fill my cup. However to often I try to fill my own cup instead of letting him with things of this world instead of drawing close to him. I pray that the people of Haiti will receive the food and shelter they need but more so I pray they draw close to the Lord and let him drink from the water of eternal life so that they shall thirst no more.
After Haiti I started at Sonlight Camp, doing staff training and getting prepared for the 63 middle school campers that will arrive tomorrow, and getting some grandparents and grand children for grandcamp. It has truly been wonderful to practice putting myself last and serving kids once again, i have noticed a lot of selfishness in my heart but I am so excite to see how God works these next few weeks and the rest of the summer.
