My team and I have come to terms with the fact we don’t sing well, we aren’t actors, and our dancing abilities is only as good as the chicken dance. After a while the chicken dance was perfected because we dance to it everyday at every school we go to. Our skit has really improved because at first the shepherds would forget their que and the wise men have yet to find frankincense and myrrh. The singing is still under works because our off key “Joy To The World” still make the kids slow clap. To top it off we will be singing at a wedding on Christmas! Our translator asked us to sing a traditional wedding song and the only thing that came to mind was “here comes the bride all dressed in white.” These past two months we have had to get comfortable with being uncoordinated and a little bit awkward.
Every Wednesday us, our hosts, and other church members come to our house for worship. We sing then at the end we have a time for “thank you God”. This night was a particular giggly night. I can’t count how many times I lost it and laughed in the middle of a serious moment. It all started when Pastor caught a bug like Mr. Miyagi and acted like it was no big deal. I kept making awkward eye contact and I just felt this need to laugh really hard! I think everyone in the room felt this way because after about twenty agonizing minutes of holding it it in everyone started dying laughing all at once. God knew we needed a good laugh after a very busy and stressful couple of days. The night finished with our translator, Ann, saying “You have no talent but God has used you the most.” and that’s when our jaws fell. Then Ann began to worry she may have offended us but really she was completely right.
When we first came we had no idea what we were doing, we were teaching colors to high schoolers and didn’t realize most students can count to at least ten in English. We came to Tak Fa unprepared but eager to learn. I think it is safe to say God used us where we are weak. Personally I am not great with kids but God made me a teacher for two months. I’m sure everyone on my team can pinpoint a moment when God used their lack of talent for something great. It makes me immensely proud of my team that we will be the team that improved the most and worked really hard. As our time in Tak Fa comes to an end I think of how we have grown and how we made it through the awkward.
In conclusion, thank you God for the many lessons, the fact you make us laugh, and that you like to use this talentless team. Thank you for the time of my life while here and Tak Fa. Thank you for blessing us for the greatest host family and friends a group of girls could ask for. Above all else thank you for loving the team and I through all the bumps in the road.
