Small things are exercises in seeing. My goal is to describe something I see, describe it in such a way that you will be able to see it too, in your imagination. I conscientiously try to avoid interpreting what I am seeing, although there will be exceptions. I also try to avoid sharing too much of my own feelings. I am not the main subject of these pieces, but the world around me. However, the things I observe and how I describe them may give you as good or better a picture of me than if I had shared those things.

As you read them, I challenge you to use your imagination to inhabit the subject. This can be an exercise in empathy. I believe it is impossible to bring positive change to people, systems, or even ourselves unless you understand them at a deep level.

Also, as you imagine these scenes, I challenge you (and me, too) to look and listen for God in each one. The whole world is filled with God’s loving presence. Take these small moments as opportunities to adjust your eyes and ears to sense God.
