For me Africa was where I was anticipating to go the most from when we signed up for the trip; mostly because of my sister, Megan’s love for the continent. Her love for the vibrant people, the rich culture, with all the colors, music and dancing all created an exciting picture of a place I wanted to love too! To understand that part of her heart! And I was not disappointed!
When we arrived in the town of Bungoma, Kenya, I was completely in love! We had a wonderful family, Pastor Jackson, Mama Jane, and sisters, Praise and Rose. We felt like celebrities everywhere we went with children running up to say hi to the Mazungu! This mind set of welcoming westerners help us significantly to create the relationships needed for each day’s ministry. Mondays, Saturdays we did door to door with a Kenyan translator and had cell group in the evenings. Tuesdays we visited the hospital to pray for the sick and injured. Then went to “youth” group in the evening, it was for the 20 something’s. We got days off on Wednesday! Thursdays we went to an orphanage and had cell group again. We got to help at the school and went to worship practice on Fridays. On Sundays two people on our team would preach in service and for two weeks us, girls also danced with the worship team! It was SO fun!
The heart of the people in Kenya is to create relationship. Everything they do from church to work to even just walking down the street takes second priority to relationship. If you know me at all this is the heart beat of my soul! God taught me about joy in every situation (poverty, loss of family, no showers, ect.), to trust Him in everything and that Joe is perfectly in God’s hand! Like my wonderful sister, Megan, Africa has stolen my heart!
