There are so many incredible stories from Honduras that it has taken me a while to wrap my brain around it and figure out how to write it in my blog. I’m going to tell you two experiences that have really changed my outlook on how God works and his abilities.
Story #1 “The man in the Dump”:
I have always believed that God could heal but I had never experienced it until training camp, so I was a little apprehensive. At the end of the month we went into the city dump to minister to the people that lived and worked there. I had no idea what to expect, but I knew I was a little nervous. So the first day we went I just stayed on the bus and helped serve the food, which I do enjoy doing but also used as an excuse to not go talk to people. Then on the second day my teammates encouraged me to do things that made me uncomfortable, so I got off the bus to talk to people. I was with Chelsey, Luke, and Drea and we spoke with this woman, we talked about her family, why she was there, and about her relationship with God. Then we prayed for her, and she left to go continue her work. Well behind us was an older man and Luke really felt the need to go and speak with him, so we did. This conversation wasn’t at all what I expected. This man told us that he was homeless and that he worked in the dump sorting and selling recyclables. He then told us that He was a Christian and that he memorizes bible verses. He just started rattling off verses that we could barely keep up with him. Then he asked us about our favorite verses in the bible and why we liked them. This man was an incredible Christian and his knowledge of the Bible just astounded me. He basically taught me what a true student of God and his word looks like. Well after talking to him for a while we asked him if there was anything in particular we could pray for him. He asked us to pray for his family, and he also told us that he had a horrible headache that just wouldn’t go away. So we started to pray for him, and it was one of the first times I really whole-heartedly believed God would heal this man. Half-way through the prayer I got a stabbing pain in my head and then just as soon as it came on it had left again. Finally, when we finished our prayer, Chelsey asked him how he felt and he told us that his headache was gone and that he felt great. At first I wanted to be apprehensive, but after looking into this man’s eyes it was just like a weight had been lifted off of him. That was the first time I have ever truly prayed for healing, and seeing the results just gave me a new found faith. For the first time I realized that healing isn’t just stories in the Bible, but that it is real and present in the world today.
