This past Sunday, I went and heard a guest speaker at a nearby church. The speaker was a Chinese pastor named Pastor Yun. He and his associate have authored an amazing book entitled The Heavenly Man recounting some of Pastor Yun’s amazing evangelistic work in China. For several decades, Pastor Yun has endured many Pauline-style torture experiences and prison sentences – all in the name of suffering for Christ.
He has the fantastic stories to tell: both legs being broken during torture, fearing never to walk again, walking “Peter” style out of a maximum security prison…the list of the miraculous goes on and on.
What intrigued me most was not his stories, but his humility and passion. Sadly, the church where he was speaking was not as expressively responsive as he probably hoped or expected. This is a man who’s sole heart is for the glory of God and the dispersion of the Gospel “back to Jerusalem” through the majority of the 10/40 window between China and the Middle East. It’s an incredibly noble vision – a modern day persecute bringing the truth and proclamation of God’s hope to those that need it most.
Let us not forget the charge of a man who has experienced the goodness of God in a truly tangible way.
