As soon as the clock hit 5:00, I raced home from work to quickly change my attire for the next activity that was listed in my planner … volleyball. I play in an outdoor league on Tuesday nights … there was nothing out of the ordinary tonight, in fact it was very similar to most of the previous evenings – lots of hugs, sweet conversations and warm smiles. On my way home I was thinking about all of the great people I have the extreme privilege of seeing at least once a week … and soon, very soon I will not be seeing their sweet faces. Keep in mind this is only one night out of my week … when I think about all of the people I interact with on a weekly basis I become overwhelmed with the Lord’s extravagance, faithfulness and provision in my friendships/relationships.

I am reminded of a conversation I had with one of my high school friends about a week and a half ago. It had been a while, probably about a year, since I had seen this person and I was talking about the pilgrimage I am about to embark on.  I was telling him all the logistical things … 11 months, 11 countries, backpack, tent … all the key words. I then began to talk about the preparations of leaving “home: the US, Colorado, Colorado Springs, Loveland, friends, family.” I mentioned that it is so hard to leave because everything is great right now … I love my family, my friends, my roommates, my co-workers … couldn’t be happier in my friendships/relationships! His comment was, “You hate to leave because you love the one’s you leave.” EXACTLY! He hit it on the head. Funny thing – that is actually the line from a song that he wrote. Finally, a song that has captured my heart’s emotions over that last few weeks and put it to music. I hope the words resonates in your heart as it did mine. So thanks Daryl for capturing these words in a song!

A thousand reasons that I’m glad to be alive
A thousand faces of a thousand friends of mine
Its not the things that I do but the people that I’m with that get me high
That get me by

This songs a letter to my friends all around the world
You know I think about you almost every day and
Even though I haven’t called I’ve been praying that you’re better than okay

A thousand reasons that I’m glad to be alive
A thousand faces of a thousand friends of mine
Its not the places I go but the people that I meet make life complete
Oh so sweet

Last time I saw you, you were so confused
The world was dark and you didn’t know where to go
If you need a hand to hold on the way you know I’m there for you babe

I know circumstances change, yeah
I know things can’t always stay the same, but
I know that I’ll see you again
And we’ll start off where we left off being friends, yeah

We’ll start off where we left off being friends

I hate to leave because I love the one’s I leave
But life sometimes takes us down different roads
And every time I leave I want to leave a legacy of love

I know circumstance change, yeah
I know things can’t always stay the same, but
I know that I’ll see you again
And we’ll start off where we left off being friends, yeah
We’ll start off where we left off being friends
