I thought it would be fun to introduce a new word for my first post … JAMBO. That is what they say in Kenya when they are greeting someone. Fun, huh?!?

Truthfully this is the first time I’ve felt inspired to blog. The whole thought of leaving everything that is comfortable for the unknown has paralyzed me over the last few weeks. It has been a journey and a process to make it thus far. And while I’m not ready for an official “countdown” of days before I leave, I am definitely in a more prepared state of heart and mind than ever before. The Lord has been faithfully and patiently leading me down this path.

Tonight I had dinner with one of my co-workers families. They grew up as missionary kids in Kenya and were absolutely thrilled to learn that I will be spending Christmas there. Deborah prepared an African meal … although I can’t remember the name of everything, I can tell you that it was quite delicious. I learned a lot tonight … first off, I began eating with a fork and soon realized that everyone else was eating with their hands. The corn meal is close to the consistency of play-doh and is used to scoop the food … it’s great because it made me feel like a kid again! Second, only eat using your right hand and never quite finish your plate unless you really want more. And I learned what a kikoi was. The night had a peaceful ending as we gathered and chatted while African music played in the background – a typical ending to a day African style.

They provided me with several books (felt like 50 lbs worth) on the African and Chinese cultures … so I’m off to hit the books!
