It’s no wonder why our culture has such an obsessive preoccupation with our appearance. Do you ever wonder why almost every home in America is decked out with mirrors in room after room after room? Don’t be fooled to believe that it’s like that everywhere around the world.
Think about it.
Maybe you say it’s just for decoration or it creates good light. And why do most bathrooms have mirrors in front of the sink? Think about how often we use the bathroom every day. And what do you do as you are washing up your hands? You check yourself out and make sure that you look okay. You probably don’t even notice that you’re doing it because it has become such an involuntary habit.
I took the liberty of doing some private investigating to support my argument 🙂 …
One of the ways I like to decompress & spend time with God is to sit in the sauna at the gym. It just so happens that there is a glass door with a view of the sinks outside the toilet stalls (which also don’t exist in many parts of the world
). One by one, women would approach the sink and without any hesitation, look up at the mirror. I watched this happen at least 7 times in the 15 minutes I observed. Most would touch up their hair or lean in for a closer look. In fact that locker room is almost impossible to walk in and out of without being faced with several opportunities to glance in a mirror.
I rest my case.
I am not saying you should stop looking in the mirror. Based solely on the abundance of mirrors in our culture, that would be almost impossible. I am asking you to consider changing the way you look into it. When we see ourselves, 99% of the time we are probably noticing things that need to be fixed. Imperfections that might take away from our “put-togetherness”. Instead of noticing your flaws, though, maybe you should be celebrating your uniqueness as one who was made perfectly so by our Creator. After all, we were created in the image of God (“So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” Genesis 1:27). Therefore, we reflect His characteristics. That is something in which you can find joy! You are no mistake. You are a MASTERPIECE. Ephesians 2:10 puts it this way: “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
And getting back to the thing about mirrors reflecting light. It’s true. God makes many references to light in the Scriptures. He created it, for one (Genesis 1:3), and He uses it to describe Jesus as the light of men and also His followers to be a light to the world (John 1:4-9 & Matthew 5:14). I could go on, but I digress. Just some thoughts to ponder when you think about the light that mirrors reflect.
So next time you look in the mirror. Don’t change a thing. Just smile and acknowledge the masterpiece God created you to be. You are sufficient. You are enough. Just the way you are.
