Chibuto, Mozambique
Part of the ministry of Africa on Fire is evangelism outreach. On the weekends, we pack up and head out to an even more remote village than the one where we are staying and bring the hope of Christ to the people there.
Upon arrival in Chalicuane, we parked on the side of a patchy soccer field, unfolded the trailer that magically transformed into a stage for the weekend’s festivities and sang and danced to entertain the swarms of children who had flocked to greet the crazy-looking white people.
Soon after the EDP (Emergency Dance Party), we had gathered a large enough crowd, I’d say around 200, to segue into some worship, Mozambiquan style. This involves an electric keyboard permanantly set to organ mode with megahuge amps and lots of silly dance moves.
Pastor Felito or Pastor Augusto would deliver a message and close with an altar call for prayer. Droves of people lined up at the front near the stage and my team and I prayed until we were forced to cut off the lights because the generator was almost out of fuel.
The evening ended around ten o’clock and then we headed back to our 1st century-style cinderblock home to eat our rice & beans and retire to our tents for the night.
During the daytime in between the evening sessions, we made hut visits and prayed for different people throughout the village.
The last day in the village we were excited to get to be a part of the new church plant there that Pastor Augusto will oversee. It is amazing to get to see the frruit of our labor because often times on the race, you come in to help take on the responsibilities of the long-term missionaries but don’t always get to see the bigger picture of what God is doing. I was a little discouraged at first when only one lady sat on the tarp waiting for the service to begin, but within a short time, about 60 women, children and men had gathered to worship the Lord with us.
