When I came back to Jesus earlier this year I knew one thing that needed to change was my relationship with Him. I realized that my whole life I have been trying to teach myself and not letting God do His job. I thought I was my best teacher, but oh how sweet is when God teaches you. Everyday since February, I have been praying for God to teach me how to love and be more like Him. In these past few months God has taught me those things and so much more that my mind could have never fathomed. He blessed me with a part in our school musical this semester, which was one of the most moving experiences I have ever had. The name of our musical was, “You’ve Got to be Carefully Taught,” it was the first time ever being performed because our talented directors wrote it. The musical was about how racism and prejudice is still alive. Our directors were inspired by conversations between the cast and the things we still see going on in this world. At first it was hard to believe that there is still so much hate going on in this world, but then I realized if you take yourself out of the world and see the things society is feeding us…it’s not so hard to believe.

“You’ve got to be taught to hate and fear, you’ve got to be taught from year to year, it’s got to be drummed in your dear little ear, you’ve got to be carefully taught. You’ve got to be taught to be afraid of people whose eyes are oddly made, and people whose skin is a different shade, you’ve got to be carefully taught.”

It was not until the day of our first performance that I realized how important this musical would be for people to hear. The audiences reactions to the musical was more than I could have ever imagined. We were sold out every night, and people came up to me during the whole performance week saying how the musical opened their eyes. One man even had tears in his eyes. Even though I was in the cast teaching the lesson; God used this musical to teach me. He showed how needed his love is in this world, and how important this trip is going to be. I did not see it at the moment but, God has listened to my prayers and is teaching me how to love everyday. Through the musical He showed me how powerful His words can be, and how important it is to look at everyone through His eyes. When you look at people through God’s eyes everyone is on the same level, despite their color, religion, even things they’ve done in their past. To look at everyone equally and full of love, is the way God intended for us to live. I am so thankful for the opportunity of sharing God’s love on the World Race, I am so thankful for the lessons God is teaching me, I am so thankful that I am being carefully taught.
