Zalu- they say she’s not beautiful because her skin is dark and her hair is coarse. She has less clothes than the rest, and her only dress is nearly separated top and bottom, not to mention it’s too small and barely reaches past her bottom. She is the first to be removed from a seat so others can sit. She is treated poorer than the rest because “she isn’t beautiful”.
When I first saw her, I knew she was special. She has a fierce personality and is very independent. She walks around with her shoulders back and her head high–she knows who she is, and she doesn’t allow the comments of others to dictate how she acts. She is respectful to those around her and those above her.
I’ve found such beauty in her this month. I can see a unique perspective of the Lord in her, and it is beautiful.
I had the opportunity to wash her feet this morning–as Jesus did with his disciples. I then prayed for her. Zalu sat by my side as I washed the next set of feet. As I prayed for the next girl, I had Zalu join in and pray with me.
The rest of the morning, Zalu remained by my side. She joined into every prayer that I prayed over the women–and most of the time, she even started joining hands before we were ready. She is a disciple in the making, and I’m thankful that the Lord chose me to spend this month with her.
Oh, and she is only 5 years old!!
