I remember the day when I heard God speak the word “Missions” to me.
It was some time after I heard my voice ask my ex-fiancé to “let me go.” As my mouth uttered the words, the arms of my heart wanted to pull them back, letter by letter. I really didn't want him to. But I knew I needed him to in order for my heart to heal.
We sat in his car looking at each other. His eyes – gloomy as the Sunday afternoon that surrounded us, told me that this time he was going to do what I asked of him.
My dream of marriage was now a dream deferred.
Then ironically, on a random Tuesday, I stumbled upon it. The post that completely changed the direction of my life and gave definition to the word God spoke to me.
It was Truth on a Random Tuesday.
With tear-filled eyes I sat and read about Stephanie May. A woman who, on a random Tuesday, made a choice that would change her completely. For her, it was a choice between working for a second year in College Ministry or spending 11 months on a mission trip traveling around the world. It was the choice between something comfortable and something wild, reckless and free.
She chose to be free.
And so did I.
That gloomy Sunday afternoon, I chose to be free from the norm, free from the expectations of man and free from the opinions of others.
I chose freedom and I haven’t looked back.
I never would have imagined that on a random Tuesday I would have stumbled upon a blog post that led me here. But, as Stephanie said, “Our everydays are important. The decisions we make on a random Tuesday are the decisions that make up a life, that make up a story, that set an example for others to follow, and that teach us that God is faithful.”
At training camp, I had the privilege of meeting Stephanie. I walked up to her and boldly proclaimed, “You’re the reason I’m here!” I shared my story with her and we embraced as if we had been friends since grade school.
Stephanie’s vulnerability in telling her story gave me the courage the share mine.
So on January 9, 2014, I will be leaving my family, my friends, my job and all that’s seemingly secure to do something wild, reckless and free – risking all for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
And it all started with a decision made on a random Tuesday.
