“Who is like the LORD our God, the One who sits enthroned on high,”

Psalm 113:5

In our evening
session last night at CGA we studied the Psalms.  We looked into the different types of Psalms
and attempted to identify the varying emotions that the psalmists were feeling
when they wrote them and also what emotions we felt as we read them and why
that’s important.

We began the session
with worship, and then followed with a question:

 Why do we worship?

Take a minute and ask
yourself that question.

Lots of answers were
given and the list can be long.  I’m sure
this could be a much deeper discussion and feel free to comment about your
thoughts regardi
ng worship, but here are a few of the things that people shared.

It’s what we were created to do.
We all worshi
p something.

Worship gives us perspective.  It
reminds us of who God is and who we are.

It’s an expression of our love for God, an offering to Him.

It’s a time to listen.

It realigns the posture of our heart with His.

As I was researching
different definitions of worship this one caught my attention:

~ to
give, at its simplest, worth to something ~

The
Psalms were the cries of the nation of Israel.
They would sing them as a way to worship God and to remember what the He had done for them.

We
noted that even in the Psalms of Lament, after they poured out their hearts to
God, they would end declaring His
character
.

The
Psalms are a reminder for us come to God raw and real.  He knows us anyway.  But let us also come to Him with an acute
awareness of His holiness and worth and also of our condition of sin without
the blood of Christ covering us (Psalm 24:1-4).  It is
only though Jesus’ costly blood that we can enter into the presence of this
holy God clean.

It is a privilege and an honor to worship and commune with God most High.

He is holy.  He is worthy.

All
praise, honor and glory to Him.

â€œO, God, sometimes I feel so
tossed and blow by the wind and the waves.
Life seems so out of control. It never slows down or takes a break.

I feel swallowed up and at the mercy of the never-ending crashing of
the waves upon my soul.

Am I looking up or down?  Where
are You?  When will you show Yourself to
me?

I’m swimming harder and yet harder.
The roaring of the sea is deafening my ears to Your quiet whisper.  I need You to rescue me.

Are you near or far?  Where is
Your strong right arm?  Why is Your
timing so different than mine?  Will the
storms never end?  Will you ever give me a glimpse of fulfillment?

Just as I regain my breath, I’m swept under again.

Father, I know that You are a God who saves.  You are slow to anger and abounding with
grace and mercy.

Each breath I take in is from You.
You are my God who saves me.

You are high and exalted, worthy
of all my praise, worthy of all this pain.
Thank You for the beauty that comes from this struggle.

You are worthy.
