Yesterday as I was sitting in the coffee shop just reading, not paying close attention but I overheard in the background the news on tv talking about the current issue with the rebels in Libya. I’m not one to just turn on the news and watch it, but for whatever reason it caught my attention. A few minutes later the cashier walked over and asked, “Is anyone watching it or do you mind if I change the channel?” The people sitting on the couch in front of the tv said they didn’t care either way. Then the girl responded by saying, “good because I was geting tired of hearing the same thing over and over again,” and changed it to some HGTV show talking about some $6000 hot tub!
Now… like I said before I’m not one to just watch the news, but for whatever reason at that very moment her comment hit me a different way. There’s plenty of times when I’ve changed the radio station when I’ve heard a song over and over again because honestly it can be rather annoying. I’m pretty sure as many times as I’ve heard “Pretty Girl Rock,” ((you know the one that says don’t hate me because I’m beautiful a million times)) and as quick as I change the station that doesn’t make it all of a sudden stop. The song is going to keep playing until it finally ends even if I change the station… It’s still there. Just like when we change the channel off the news because we get tired of listening to it or it’s too uncomfortable to watch… It’s still there. Those terrible events are still going on whether we choose to acknowledge it or not.
Again, I’m not saying I haven’t done the same thing, nor am I saying you need to watch the news. I’m simply saying how I felt and the way it hit me yesterday. There is so much going on in this world around us: our world, our country, our state, our community, even with the people that we come in contact with everyday, but we (I can admit I’m just as guilty, if not more) are so caught up in our own lives that we are blind to what’s going on around us. We fail to think about anyone but ourselves. You might be thinking, “well, that’s not me. I have my friends and family that I would do anything for.” That’s all good, so do I. But what about those people on the news, the people that you’ve never met, the children that will never live past the age of 1 year old, or the 25,000 people that die EVERY DAY from hunger related causes?
It’s easy to say, “well I don’t know them,” or “that doesn’t affect me, so I can’t help them.” Just for a minute I want you to think about someone (or maybe even two people) that you do know and you do love. Maybe that person you thought about a few minutes ago and said that you would do anything for. Now what if that person or those people were struggling in some way or maybe on an extreme level weren’t here anymore…? Would it be as easy for you to change the “channel” on their lives? Could you honestly look that person in the face and say, “I’m sick of listening to the same thing over and over…Your situation isn’t affecting me, so I can’t help you,” and just go right back to what you were doing before?
I’d like to think that things weren’t that way that we’d do everything to help, but that’s not always the case. So many times we think that if it’s not affecting our lives directly then it’s not really going on… NEWS FLASH!! IT’S STILL GOING ON!! Whether you change the station on the radio or change the channel on the tv, whether you want to recognize it or not… it’s still going on.
I’m not only asking you or the cashier at the coffee shop, but myself as well… what’s it going to take? Why not if instead of changing the “channel”, you were the change?
Myth: I’m just one person (or I’m too young, or I’m a girl, or I’m a broke college student, or… insert other stereotypes here)…. I can’t change anything, especially the world.
Truth: I’m the one person that WILL make the change.
“This same Good News that came to you is going out all over the world. It is bearing fruit everywhere by changing lives, just as it changed your lives from the day you first heard and understood the truth about God’s wonderful grace.” -Colossians 1:6
Even if you don’t like this artist…I’d really like for you to watch this video and listen to the words of the song as he’s sings.

“I got a vision, to make a difference.
And its starting today.
Cause I know there’s sunshine behind that rain
I know there’s good times behind that pain, hey
Heaven tell me how I can make a change
I close my eyes and I can see a better day
I close my eyes and pray
I close my eyes and I can see a better day
I close my eyes and pray
For the broken-hearted.
I pray for the life not started
I pray for all the ones not breathing.
I pray for all the souls in need.
I pray. Can you give em one today.
I just cant sleep tonight
Can someone tell how to make a change?”
