As I’m finishing my second delicious chicken taco (aka: shell, chicken, and cheese) I receive a small tap on my shoulder. Turning around, I find Angelica and her friend Jocelynn standing behind me with Pastor Al. “They want you to come eat salad.” Salad. My face betrays me as I turn back towards my team. After three and a half months, they know me well enough to know how picky of an eater I am-especially with vegetables-which is typically what salads consist of. “No” is not an option when the 7 year old child is pleading with her eyes. So I leave my mostly eaten second taco sitting on my plate and follow Angelica to her house. My silent prayers to God were heard, and Angelica’s mom pulls out a FRUIT SALAD! Pineapple, mango, coconut, and cheese, doused in some sort of sauce. It was quite good!

Favorite Food: Chicken Strips and French Fries.

I’ve never been what you could call an ‘adventurous eater.’ I like my comfort foods. The World Race consists of some extremely NOT comfortable foods.   It was one of my biggest concerns coming on the Race.  I was recently asked to write a blog about the foods we’ve eaten on the Race-so Susan Snyder-this one’s for you!

Halu, halu (or something that sounds like that).  Location: Philippines.  Translated it means “mix mix.”  This included: beans, shaved ice, fruit cocktail, coconut milk, and some sort of iced ube (sweet potato) icecream.  Without the beans, I’ve heard it’s quite good…with the beans however…eh.

Grilled Food.  Location: El Salvador.  Some new friends came over late one night to grill us some food.  It took long enough to start the flame in the grill, that we didn’t actually sit down to eat this feast until past midnight-which is not rare in El Salvador.  It was chicken, rice, steak, and veggies.  Surprisingly enough it was really quite delicious!

Wedding Feast.  Location: Philippines.  We were invited to a wedding on our first day in the country.  We went.  They fed us.  🙂  Mostly, it was rice, and some meat, and vegetable substance.  However, in the bowl behind the green pitcher is a lovely “pig blood and intestines” delicacy.  I didn’t try it…thank the Lord.  Note to self: stay away from pig blood.

Pupusas!  Location: El Salvador.  A tortilla outside, filled with cheese, mushed meat, or beans.  One of our favorites from El Salvador!  We liked it so much we made it a couple times in Honduras when we got to cook for ourselves!

Frybread and Hotdogs.  Location: Panama.  I can’t even count how many times we considered this as breakfast.  The frybread was amazing the first couple times…but the human body can only handle so much frybread.  It was good, nonetheless, and quite a bit better than other things we could eat.

Pizza.  Location: Philippines.  The seafood pizza in the bottom right corner has clams…shells and all….and shrimp.   Bottom left is cheese with sliced tomatoes on top.  The other one was covered in vegetables (natually I didn’t touch that one.)

Pupaya ‘smoothie’ Location: Guatemala.  I ordered this, imagining a pupaya smoothie, with milk, ice, sugar, goodness all around.  It was lukewarm.  Not sweetened.  And all together an unexpected grossness that perhaps ruined pupaya’s for me.

Cacao Fruit. Location: Panama.  This is apparently the fruit that eventually makes chocolate?  the seeds are covered in this white goopy substance.  It was really good, and I ate several chunks!  Too bad you can’t find it in the US.

Fried Plantains and Blended Beans.
Location: El Salvador.  Yes. Plantains were EVERYWHERE in Central America.  As were beans.  However, we only ever had blended beans in El Salvador.  My favorite style of beans?  Refried.

Last but most certainly not least, the one food we have had in almost every meal and atleast once a week since I left in October: Rice.

Overall my stomach has been quite content, and may have grown just a bit. I’m eating vegetables more (still not a lot, but one step at a time). However, there is always a Coca Cola just a short walk away. 🙂
