Strength, integrity, boldness, beauty, purity, and laughter.
These are words that describe the character of team Sound of Strength and I cannot begin to describe the impact these women have already had on my life in the two months we have been together.
The other night we sat in our “family time” dreaming of fast food and talked with excitement about the great things happening in our lives when we return from the race in six months: weddings to be planned, grad school, new jobs, and trips to Disneyland. With each new declaration the volume continued to build, sometimes it is good for us to mentally escape the reality in which we currently live. It takes us nearly an hour to get to the closest internet and over 2 1/2 hours to the nearest burger joint. We wash our clothes in a tub of water and hang them out to dry. We eat rice with almost every meal and we take showers in the dark (because the electric goes out on a regular basis).
Yet… this night was different. As my teammates’ excitement for home grew, I became quite. In that moment I realized that being home would mean saying goodbye to my sisters. While I do look forward to the convenience of the United States, I realize now that I would give all of that up for true community. It makes me sad to think about waking up each morning without these five amazing women sleeping next to me. However, I am thankful for the time God has given us and I look forward to completing this journey with them at my side.
