On Sunday, my pastor preached about Christmas from Joseph’s perspective. Later that night when I was at church again, I started thinking about the role that Joseph played in Jesus’ birth. He was obedient and faithful throughout Mary’s pregnancy and he was there to take care of her and baby Jesus after he was born. He wasn’t in the spotlight. In fact, he never even said a word. He was a behind-the-scenes kinda guy. However, Joseph wasn’t the only character in the story. There were others who were a part of Jesus’ birth. So let’s walk through the story and think about what role you’re playing during this season of your life.

The inn-keeper wasn’t able to give them a place to stay. He had no room for the Christ child to be born. No room for life to spring up in him. Is that you this season?
The angel brought the message of the Good News. They appeared to the shepherds and told them a savior had been born. Are you bringing the Good News to those around you?
The shepherds immediately left to go and find the Christ child. After they saw the baby, they were amazed and began to spread the word of what they had seen. Are you sharing your experiences? Sharing the amazing things you have seen God do?
Last but not least is Mary, the mother of Jesus. I read a book this summer called The Godbearing Life and it describes Mary as the original God-bearer, but not the last. We are called to bring Christ into the world. We may not physically bear him as Mary did but we can certainly bear him spiritually.
So what role will you play this holiday season?
