“You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. “You are the light of the world-like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” (Matthew 5:13-16)

I don’t know why this verse in the picture (and the ones surrounding it) resonate with me so much, but I love them. Maybe it’s because I have come through so much darkness. Maybe it’s because I can visually see what Jesus is talking about here. This glorious light shining in the darkness. No matter how dark the night and how small the light, it still shines brightly.

This past summer I worked as a Christian Education intern for a church in Grapevine, Texas. Our verse of the summer was from this set of verses and I had the pleasure of speaking to our youth about it twice. The first time stands out to me more. I talked about being a light, the different parts of a lamp, and specifically questioned the students to think about what kind of light they are to the people around them. I pose the same question to you. Are you a candle? A blacklight? A spotlight? A lamp with a lampshade the dulls your light? What kind of light are you being and what kind of light is God really calling you to be?

In other news, I just got my t-shirt design in and am very excited to share it with you all! So how it works is you just tell me what sizes and how many you want. I’m selling them for $20 each. The more that are ordered, the cheaper they are and therefore the more money that goes towards my race account. You can pay me by check, cash, or paypal. The paypal way only charges fees if you use a debit or credit card, so if you link your bank account or use a paypal balance, it costs nothing extra. I will order them all at once and must have the money before I do that. If I need to ship it to you, it will cost $3 extra, but I’m expecting most of you I’ll be able to see before I leave.

I wanted my shirt based off of Matthew 5:14 and after some deliberation with the designer, I ended up with this song title. So I’m going to share the song that inspired this t-shirt design as well.
