Back in India my team watched Boy Meets World every day. Cory, Shawn, Topanga, and Mr. Feeny got us through that treacherous time. We got through four and a half seasons that month and continued at a much slower pace through Nepal and Thailand. When our team was split up at the end of Thailand we promised to watch the season finale at final debrief together. Last night, we came together to watch the final two episodes. The season ends with Cory, Topanga, Shawn, and Eric moving to NYC. They say goodbye to their friends and family and ask Mr. Feeny if there’s anything he has left to teach them.

“Do good,” he tells them.

He says do good, not do well. And, I think that’s what Jesus tells us too. He wants us to do good in this world. Yes, he wants us to do well and be successful but more than that he wants us to make a difference in this world. He has called us change-makers. We are representatives of Jesus, called to be like Him. Jesus did a lot of good and He did well in the eyes of Christians, but in the eyes of unbelievers? No way! Jesus didn’t have a successful company or a lot of money. He didn’t fit in well with the people around Him. The people in His own hometown didn’t believe He was good enough to be the Messiah, but He was and He did good to everyone He met. That’s what is important.

This has been a year of doing good, but it doesn’t stop here in South Africa. For all of us, it must continue on as a part of our daily lives. As we move back into the places we left, we will feel restless and like we’ve lost a sense of meaning for our lives. But no matter what kind of job we begin after the race, we still have the opportunity to do good. When we drive past a homeless person, we can hand them food or money. We can still volunteer our time to the communities we live in. We can still do so much good wherever we are.
