5 ways to communicate when you don’t know the language and don’t have a translator.
(In order of least to most effective).

1. Smile and nod, pretending you understand (beware you could be agreeing to get married to a stranger!)

2. Repeat “No comprend” or “No intiendo” over and over (just know that most people will continue to try to talk to you, probably slower and louder, thinking that will help you understand the language.)

3. Grunt and point (can work at times…but know that you will most likely embarrass your teammates!)

4. Charades (Tricky, cause it’s hard to know if they really understand, but can be fun!)

5. Pictionary (A great way to both entertain kids and learn the language, even if you are like me and can’t draw well.)

5 ways to entertain kids in foreign countries when you can’t speak the language.

1. Do math problems (Before attempting in Haiti, practice up on your Roman Numerals or you will get stumped!)

2. Futbol! (Or other sports, just know they may not play by all out rules.)

3. Copy everything they do. (you will get laughed at a lot…especially when you try to repeat what they say in their language.)

4. Act natural…do what you normally do. (People will be watching your every move and you will probably feel like an animal on display at the zoo!)

5. Take photos. (Pull out the camera and the kids come running!)

Hope these suggestions come in handy if you ever find yourself in similar situations!
