We just arrived back to South Africa after 19 days in Dondo, Mozambique. Nothing was what we were expecting. We ended up being split apart from the rest of the squad and did actually help out the Iris branch in Dondo. We also ended up having beds inside and only used our tents once for an over-night evangelism trip to a near-by village. I will admit, I was disappointed not to be roughing it like we were told we would be. We had showers, a real toilet, and a kitchen to cook in. We had been told we needed to provide food for ourselves and that we needed to buy it in South Africa because it would be too expensive in Mozambique. So we had pasta, potatoes, soup, oatmeal and some fruit with us. When we got there we were told we could eat the Iris base food free of charge! They serve the same menu every week and it includes beans and rice on more than one occasion. (I hate beans!) I did enjoy the fish and rice, though. And for lunch, instead of rice they serve shema that really has no flavor but if you heat it up with milk and sugar it tastes an awful lot like cream of wheat. I loved it!
Anyways, I don’t have the opportunity to upload any of my pictures right now, so I will wait for the main stories until I can. To tide you over, I’ll let you know that I had a great time this month playing badminton with a bunch of little boys. The youngest one (6 years old) was struggling with being able to hit the birdie, but by the last day he could hit it back to me 4 times in a row before missing!
While we tried to teach them to play volleyball, they had little interest. They kept wanting to use their feet! So we gave up and played lots of soccer with them. I am not a very good soccer player, having never learned, and so they laughed at me a lot…but it was fun! Will update with more details as soon as possible! Thanks for all the prayers!
