It’s pretty sweet what the King of the universe can do through you when you just give the day over to Him.
This Saturday was one of the best days yet in Costa Rica. We didn’t have our normal ministry at Abraham Project, so instead we did a prayer walk. We spent some time in prayer before and just asked the Lord to put someone in our path to share the gospel with, and it was awesome to see Him honor that prayer. We split up into groups of three, so Cy, Andrew, and I headed out to go pray for the community. We prayed for a lot of areas and people and we ended up at a little workout park, because they have those here in Costa Rica for some reason. I obviously wanted to go show off my muscles so we went over to the pull up bars and met some ripped guys there, almost as buff as me. We ended up talking to this guy named Cedric, who spoke really good English, and asked him about his tattoos. He told us about his tattoo of a demonic goat with a 3rd eye and his beliefs, which lead in to a perfect opportunity to share our beliefs with him. We all shared a little bit of the gospel with him, and he was very receptive and then we got to pray with him. There were definitely seeds planted that God will increase.
The first part of the day was awesome, but it got even better from there. After lunch a small group of us; Cy, Avery, Savana, Paige, Lindsey, and I went to Tres Rios. On Monday a group of the girls went there and met some homeless men, so they wanted to go back to talk and eat with them, so Cy and I tagged along. Before we left we spent a while in prayer to ask the Lord to move today and to use us, and man did He outdo Himself.
We took the bus over there and when we arrived there was a huge farmer’s market going on, probably the biggest I’ve ever seen. The homeless men weren’t where they were last week so we walked around. I bought a delicious avacodo and we watched an indoor soccer game for a little bit. We went back out to look for the homeless people, but we couldn’t find them. Instead we saw two guys playing soccer, so Cy, Lindsey, and I asked if we could join them and we started playing soccer and hackey sack with them. Their names were Andres and Hector. While we were playing, Paige, Avery, and Savana left to go pray for some people. While we were playing a lady came up and handed all of us gospel tracks, and Cy and I just looked at each other like okay, this is awesome. They didn’t speak much English, but we were able to ask them if they knew Jesus and we talked with them and got to pray for both of them. While we were praying a guy named Henrry came up to us because he noticed us praying and wanted to pray with us. So we started talking with him and it turns out he’s a missionary and pastor from Costa Rica and was with about 20 other people from their church.
We asked if we could pray for all of them, so we went over to where they were and prayed for their whole group and they prayed for all of us, it was such a blessing. We got to talking to Henrry more, because he was one of the only ones who spoke English, and he invited us to church service that started in about 30 minutes. We said sure, we just had to go get the other group. We went to go get the other girls, and it turns out they were sharing the gospel and talking to this guy named Bryan for like 30 minutes. It was so cool because it started by them praying for a guy with a limp, and Bryan came over and offered to translate for them because he spoke great English. So he translated the prayer for them and then they just started talking with him and praying for him too, it was so cool!
After that we were ready to go to church. We walked over there, and when we got there everyone greeted us so nicely and showed us so much love. They asked us if we were hungry and wanted to eat, so of course we answered with an enthusiastic yes! They seriously pulled out tables, chairs and delicious food; rice, lentos, tomatoes, chips and a scrumptious drink.
It was so incredibly nice, and we got to talking with a sweet guy named Ever who had such a heart for the Lord.
Church was supposed to start at 3:00, and it was about 3:10 and we asked if we should get in there, but they were in no rush at all, they told us to take our time. They seriously postponed church for us. We finally got in there and they had a lady come up to translate for us. We sang a song, and then Henrry went up and started talking about the day and invited our whole group to come up and say our name and tell them how we were feeling, which took us by surprise. It was so crazy though, I felt the love of God so much in that room. We sat back down and Henrry gave a message about the sheep and the goats passage, and Ever gave a little message as well. They Henrry announced that they were now going to sing a song in English, so we were excited because we thought we would be able to sing along. Turns out they wanted us to lead the song, Haha! We all went up there and sang ‘How Great Thou Art’ and we just gave Avery the microphone because she has an amazing voice. After we sang we had to go home, so Henrry, the lead pastor, just left and drove us home. When we arrived to the base we got out and all prayer together one last time, but we definitely want to see him again and go back to their church.
One of the coolest parts of the story is that Andres, one of the first guys we started playing soccer with just tagged along with us the whole day. He ate with us, went to church with us, even went up to the front of the church and shared his name and how he was feeling. He later shared with us that one of his dreams was to walk and hangout with Americans and it was just so cool to see how joyful he was the entire day. He also got to hear the gospel at least two or three times that day.
Looking back on the whole thing is so cool because if the lady never gave us the gospel tracks, we might not have prayed for Andres and Hector, and if we didn’t pray for them Henrry would have never come up to us, and if Henrry didn’t come up to us we wouldn’t have met their group and gone to church with them and ate with them and would not have been blessed by each others company. It was all so crazy how God orchestrated the whole thing.
I think one of the biggest things that God taught me today was to be faithful to do the little things that He asks you to do, because you never know how He’s going to use that. It probably seemed like a very small thing for that lady to hand us gospel tracks, and even I’ve thought many times if handing out tracks really does much. However if that lady didn’t listen to God and give us those tracks, our day would have looked very different. When God asks me to do things, no matter how small they may seem, I’m striving to get to the point to be obedient no matter what.
You never know what the King of the universe may want to do through you.
