I’M IN AFRICA BABY!
We’ve officially wrapped up our time in Asia and have headed over to Southern Africa. Our travel days were so long but after spending New Year’s Eve with the whole squad, we went our separate ways again. Our team arrived at Tholoana Ea Lerrato (The Seed of Peace) Orphanage on Tuesday evening, the 1st of January!
This first week here has already been my favorite week of being on the Race. Being at an orphanage I thought I would be the one giving love, yet I have never felt so overwhelmed with smiles, hugs and playful giggles than right here.
Every morning, Monday through Friday, we wake up at 5:00am (5:30am when I’m not feelin it) and at 6am we bathe the little ones and clothe them. Then, we help out in the kitchen with breakfast before giving a hand with chores. After having our own breakfast and JT (Jesus Time) Brynna, Amanda and I have bible study with the older kids and Sydney, Hannah, and Calin run bible study with the younger Kids. I love it so much. The Kids are on Holiday vacation until the 15th, so we spend the evenings playing games outside and goofing around. Once school starts we’ll be walking them to school and helping with homework! We also have a few events we’re beginning to plan!
I have loved seeing my teammates thrive here. Hannah’s been leading worship every morning and when she’s not, she’s got a baby on her hip. Amanda’s loving the animals that roam the grounds and the other day I looked outside and she was surrounded by kids “Ooooing” and “Ahhhhing” while she took pictures of a giant grasshopper. She ended up staying outside with them for hours after that. I’ve caught Calin having photoshoots with a few girls almost everyday and one of them loves her so much she’s writing best friend notes to her already. Brynna’s obsessing over their smiles and little hands and I love watching her tickle them and hearing their laugh echo across the yard. And then there’s Sydney… I swear she’s going to fall asleep in the girls room one night. Her heart for these kids can be easily measured by the amount of time she spends with them. But it makes sense why she can love them so well, anytime she’s not with them she’s either eating or has her face glued to her bible. I love my team, I wish you could see them in action.
Everyday The Lord has been filling me up.Teaching me something new. Giving me eyes to see and a heart like His to love these kids how He would.
When people think of orphans they usually feel sorry and pity them. Yet, every time I’m with these kids I feel joyful, peaceful, and so loved. It doesn’t always make sense to me because I never walked in their shoes… but here, at the orphanage, they are a family and take such good care of each other. And they may not have parents but they have a Heavenly Father who adores them and has given them what they need; food three times a day, clothes on their backs, and a bed with a roof. It’s not high-end Pottery Barn, it’s not food from Whole Foods grocery store, and many clothes are worn until all seams are broken. Oh, but the Joy they have is greater than I have been able to imagine.
I’m still learning so much about the conditions of this world and true sufficiency in Christ. I’m still finding brokenness and praying the Lord takes away pride. But I’m so thankful I am able to wrestle through it all it right here, in a small house in Lesotho. And I’m thankful I am able to continue to see the world not only through pictures but with my own hands and feet for months to come. I hope to continue growing in patience and servanthood every month while I meet new people and learn new cultures.
Honestly, one of my favorite parts is being able to share this journey with you all through my blog. I wouldn’t be here without your prayers and support! This month, please be praying for the children here, that they will grow up with a hunger to know God more and know deeply that they are so loved by Him. Pray The Lord continues to provide for them through direct donations and food donations. Pray for my team to rest well so that we can overflow the love we have from Jesus onto them. Pray for financial support for my team so we can be fully funded by the end of this month; to be able to stay on the missions field!
Thank you so much for reading and I can’t wait to share more!
Check out Facebook for photos! (I’m unable to download photos onto my blog at the moment)
Love you all!
