Highs:

  • Sitting on the top of our boat and watching the pink dolphins

  • Children’s ministry with the port town kids

  • When you hear the generator turn on

  • The beautiful empanada lady who comes to our boat and asks everyday if we want empanadas

  • Walking to the local store and communicating we needed baking powder with limited Spanish and we got it!

  • When little girls gift you with guavas they just picked off the tree

  • Getting to be the first to try out the air conditioning on the boat (even if it was only for only 30 minutes)

  • The sound of the mosquito zapper when you make contact with a mosquito

  • Going to the weird fish museum/aquarium because our taxi driver told us to (we saw a lot of preserved fish from our river)

  • Excitement of the kids when we invited them to come to our children’s program

  • When you go into town for ice cream and WiFi and walk into air conditioning

Lows:

  • Showers that shock you when the electricity is turned on

  • Clothes that won’t get clean

  • 5,120 mosquito bites on only one leg (that might be an exaggeration

  • Waking up in a full sweat

  • Being swooped by bats in the Hull

  • When you hear the generator turn off

  • When an ant colony has made a home in your backpack

  • When you stand for too long on the land in front of your boat and you get bitten by fire ants

  • When your mosquito zapper runs out of charge

  • When you find a mosquito and a spider living in your tent or room simultaneously

  • When you find a fruit from a tree and find out you can not eat it

  • Chicken town hall meetings at 4 am

  • Getting charged by various large animals

  • When your door doesn’t close all the way and you pray that no mosquitos get into your room while you sleep

  • Sitting in the very back of a taxi and having to wait 10 years in the heat for everyone else to get out before you can get out.

  • When you can not get your feet clean ever

Bozos:

  • Taxis getting stuck in the mud for twenty minutes while trying to get back to our boat #rainyseason

  • Trying to purchase chicken but instead we end up with quail. Yum 🙂

  • When the chair breaks during your skit when doing children’s ministry

  • When random clothes or water bottles fall into the river and you have to go retrieve them

  • When you go to open a window and realize there is no glass in it

  • When you think you are going to an aquarium and end up going to a fish museum where all the fish are preserved

  • When you have been scratching your butt in public all month because of mosquitos

  • When you are not sure if it is a pimple or a mosquito bite  

  • Having to set up the portable dental chair and test it out without instructions.
