Highs:

  • being greeted by a slew of humans at 4 am at the bus station

  • Singing in Spanglish in the car whenever we would go anywhere

  • Eating freshly made breads at every meal

  • Mama Paola’s cooking every day

  • Getting to lay the pillars for our hosts new house

  • Seeing how blessed by the lord I am because of my new teammates and getting to hear their stories

  • Learning new games from the kids like a card game called Tibi Tibi.

  • Going to the beach and mountains on adventure days

  • Seeing the ruins of a town destroyed by floods

  • Floating in the salty sea

  • Petting ponchito the three legged sheep

  • Helping feed the chickens and pigs

  • All the hugs and cuddles from the kiddos

  • Being trusted to cut Oscar’s hairs down then getting to cut Courtney’s hair at mini debrief because she liked how I cut oscars

  • Getting to explore all the abandoned houses in cascada

  • Sitting on the swings and having quiet time

  • Walking or running along the dirt roads and not seeing another soul

  • Making pies for the family

  • Learning to make homemade pasta and empanadas

  • Chiri pan- this sausage like delishiousness on a freshly made roll with lettuce and tomato.

 

Lows:

  • Riding the the van to church and sweating because the air con doesn’t work and you can’t have the windows down because all the dirt will get in the car from the road

  • Riding in the van with the windows down and feeling the dirt cake on your teeth and face

  • There being a wind storm at the beach so you can’t sit on the shore without getting pelted with sand

  • Not having consistent WiFi to stay in contact with friends and family back home

  • Constantly breaking things at the house

  • Finding out that February is the month of the flies in Argentina (they were everywhere)

  • Saying goodbye to this family, crying with them because our time was so good togetherHaving to participate in killing a oposs

Bozos:

  • When saying yes to wanting to go to town on the first day and then finding out that meant sitting in a car for an hour and a half while our friend had a job interview and then going into town after that.

  • Trying to step down out of the van and not seeing the dog, Simba, trying to get in the van because it is dark so you almost crush the dog and fall out of the van

  • Killing an opossum becomes a family activity at midnight because it had killed 12 of their chickens. Kids trying to hand you a maschettie and you telling them to give it to someone else every time because you want no part of killing the animal.

  • Playing futbol with the kids, stepping in a hole, falling down, and rolling your ankle

  • Getting destroyed by 7,9,10 and 12 year olds at fuseball

  • Playing uno with the littles and not knowing how to communicate that they are cheating so instead you just go with it and always lose.

  • Thinking we were going into town on the first day of arrival and end up sitting in the car for two hours while our friend has a job interview.
