From this morning’s journal entry:

I
just read Isaiah 65 again, because that seems to be the first verse in
my mind still. I tried to read for understanding and this is what I got:

Blessed are the poor in spirit…

I’ve
also been reading “Everything Belongs” by Richard Rohr and he speaks
about Jesus calling those who say they “get it” or “know it all and
understand it all” are actually blind.
“Because you say “we see”, you are blind.”

In
the first half of Isaiah 65, the Lord seems very angry with whom I
conclude is His church. He says they serve idols and other gods, but at
the same time claim to be righteous and holy, and put down others for
not being as great as they. This is where I understood the meaning of
“Blessed are the poor in spirit…”

To be poor in spirit means
to be dependent upon the Lord – not on oneself. Every pride and
bragging right comes from the Lord alone, not by one’s own self.

Overall
it is not Spiritual Greatness we’re to achieve in this life, but utter
dependency upon the one who is and makes us in His image.
