Hello to all my supporters, family, and friends! It’s month 5 and I’m in Asia!! My team and I have been serving this month in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. As I mentioned through previous blog posts our team this month is serving by ATL (Asking the Lord). That gives us the freedom to pray over whatever it is God wants us to do here in KL and frees up a lot of time to be with Jesus! We’ve been pursuing friendships with those in our community and on the streets. We’ve gone to coffee shops, reached the homeless on the streets, made friends with the shop vendors and at Mosque’s! Because, this month looks so different I will set up this blog with some cool stories to share with you all!
#1 Reaching the homeless with Food and a Smile
On the first week of our time in KL our team had been struggling getting used to the new culture that was at hand in Malaysia. In Malaysia, it is illegal to evangelize to any national Muslim. Fear began driving us rather than the boldness and authority we have in Christ. That’s when our team decided to pass out sandwiches for those that are homeless. As we met with each person- some sleeping and not getting the chance to speak with or others through writing on paper b/c they were deaf, we quickly realized we found new friends! And… apparently other people saw our love for Jesus too! Through my teammates, Instagram scrolling she fell upon a picture of my teammates and I who were giving food to our now friend. The caption said “Muslim and Christian helping each other.” WOW. What an amazing and powerful testimony of what God can do! Our minds can’t comprehend the greatness of who He is and how He is willing to step in and work when we go into an uncomfortable place to love those around us!
#2 God is FAITHFUL- Harvest Bible Chapel KL
In case you may be unaware of what church I go to at home, I attend Harvest Bible Chapel in Chicago. 2 years ago, our pastor had a series called “Risen for the Nations” where he’d be visiting churches all around the world that was collaborating with HBC. He went to Nepal, Israel, Kenya, and… Kuala Lumpur! Again, our God is so faithful and good over our lives! I remember sitting in the front row watching the live stream service and remembering a red curtain with KL. Wanting so badly to be where our pastor was at and being able to reach those that didn’t know the name of Jesus! As the series progressed one sermon that captivated my heart just like the moment I accepted Christ was accepting the call to serve Christ wherever you were and share who His name among the nations. Although, I had a lot of fears in standing up knowing the weight it would carry on my life, I stood up and accepted the call only to realize that I had then started crying like I never had cried before! It was an emotional and beautiful moment in my life. Fast forward to February 2017 where I’m laying on my bed and remember that there’s a church here. Walk into HBC KL and the emotions begin flooding. I hear the songs that I used to sing in Chicago and remember how faithful God has been through it all. His faithfulness in knowing that I so desired to be on a mission trip and that I had seen this church on TV through a live stream!
#4 Heading to the Mosque & Befriending Muslim Women!
During one of our ministry days the team decided to go to Central Market in Kl with the intent of visiting the mosque. As we arrived we quickly realized that women were not allowed inside during their times of prayer. As we went back to few stairs and sat down we were in awe. Hundreds of men were coming in this mosque to pray together. Through that, we had the opportunity to have conversations with some beautiful Muslim women and listen to each other’s perspective on what we believed in. Apart from that specific time we’ve made some incredible friendships this month for ATL. God has granted us with friends that are incredibly loving and hospitable! Here are some pictures of ministry!
